Ten man Gouna sent the home crowd wild after a well-deserved win over El Menya at a windy Bustan Ground last Sunday to set up a third round clash in the Egyptian Cup.
Mostafa Mara headed home in the 9th minute to ensure a trip to Alexandria in April to clash with Egyptian League site Itthad. The right half opened the score after a fine cross coming from Ahmad Fekry.
Not long after Waleed Salman was sent off after a harsh decision, allegedly having brought down his opponent.
El Menya rarely troubled the home defence in which new-signing Mano was outstanding. The home side made most of the early running and, in the 19th minute, Mahmoud thundered a shot from 30 yards which crashed off the post, the rebound falling to Mohamed who was ruled offside.
Soon after, Haitham scampered down the right but, when his cut-back found Mahmoud 10 yards out, the crowd favourite scuffed his shot past the post. Haitham then fired a fired into the side-netting from the edge of the area after twisting his way past his opponent.
El Gouna FC were happy to go in at half-time a goal up albeit with ten men. Just short of the hour an Ashraf cross-shot was deflected off the Menya full back only to go agonisingly wide. Gouna could have had more if it hadn’t been for the superiour El Menya goalie.
The 3rd round Cup tie with Itthad from Alexandria, a repeat for last year’s exploits, is scheduled for 8 April 2006.
El Gouna will travel to Assiut on 15 february to meet second from bottom El Whaladeya in the League.
