I will be back in El Gouna from August 28th till September 12th, 2013.

In El Gouna the sun is shining, and all hotels, restaurants and diving centers are looking forward to make your holidays the best time of the year.

Enjoy El Gouna.

WiFi and doing business in El Gouna

October 22nd, 2011
Posted in Uncategorized

With the increased use of smartphones like Android, iPhone and tablets like the popular Ipad, every day more tourists use social networks like FaceBook, TripAdvisor and Foursquare or daily digital photoalbums like Flickr and TripColor while they are enjoying their vacation trip.
Also in El Gouna!

But roaming costs to the Internet can be very expensive. Free WiFi is appreciated!

Therefor local businesses should not underestimate the added value of offering WiFi access in their shop, cafe or restaurant for free to their customers. Because if people like the place, or the service or the prices, they will write down their experiences on the fly in those social networks when they have free access to WiFi.

It is quite easy and lowcost to offer free WiFi in El Gouna:
Install in a power socket a Huawei Home Gateway from Etisalat (one time cost of about 350 eg pounds = about 50 €) and have an Etisalat USB stick with a monthly subscription price of about 150 eg pounds for 6 gigabyte.
Put an easy password on the WiFi network and hand it it out to your customers if they ask for it. The gateway can deliver WiFi at about 15 meters range.
Several smartphones can use the WiFi at the same time without interference.

The advantage for you as a business(wo)man in El Gouna is that for a small running cost of about 5 pounds a day for the usb stick subscription, your customers will praise your business in the social networks and this will attrack more customers to your place, …as long as the other competition is not so clever to offer this service as well…

Example: a new library is next to the hospital: here free wifi is avalable after paying 1 euro entrance fee to the library. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is open every day from 10 till 22 hrs.

bibliotheca alexandrina

shady sitting areas with wifi

And if you have a website:
Android phones can read Flash written websites, but iOS devices like iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad from Apple Computer are not able to read websites in Flash script. So it can happen that your potential customer has such an Apple device, as there are already 250 million iOS devices sold.

If your website is using flash (like for example seascope submarines in el gouna), well, people with the money to buy Apple products will not be able to check your time table or pricelist… Clever? So you better make your website readable on smartphones and iPads without using flash scripting language.

Hubert has left El Gouna, and therefor the El Gouna Times is only updated once in a while!!

For the interested visitor, however, we have put together a list of the best services in town. Although this (personal) list is not complete, it will certainly help you to enjoy your stay at the most in El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt.

Remember: don’t stay all day in your all-inclusive hotel, but go out and visit El Gouna: DownTown and Abu Tig Marina are easy reachable by Tok-Tok or shuttle bus….
Much more to do and to visit in El Gouna and prices are very competitive compared to the hotel shops!

Best Taxi Service: TAXI MINA

Taxi Mina: confirms your call by SMS, was always on time and their drivers speak english very well:
call: 0020 12 7340369 or 012 7340369

Best Diving Centre in El Gouna: DIVE CONNECTION

The Dive Connection is the newest dive centre located in the Panorama Bungalows Resort in El Gouna, Egypt. Niko Baumann and Andrea Schubert, both from Germany, run the centre. Niko has 30 years of diving experience and is already working as a PADI Course Director and Tech Instructor Trainer and has spent 10 years in El Gouna’s waters. Andrea with 14 years diving experience has spent 5 years as a guide on yachts exploring the Red Sea, before deciding to settle down as a PADI Instructor in El Gouna in 2001. The Dive Connection gets the benefit of Niko and Andrea’s longtime El Gouna experience. They offer first class service in diving and water-sports.
Ask for Mike (Savelberg) as your preferred Dive Instructor.

Best Things to do in El Gouna

Besides snorkeling and scuba diving, we prefer Kitesurfing (webcam), Horse Riding at Yalla Stable, drive Go Cart behind Rihana and get a suntan at one of the beaches before shopping at the many boutiques in marina and downtown.

A new library is also installed next to the hospital where free wifi is avalable after paying 1 euro entrance fee to the library. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is open every day from 10 till 22 hrs. They have a very nice big screen presentation called Culturama in french, german, english or arabic about egypt’s history. It costs 7 € pp, and it is worth every cent! Please call in advance to be sure for the language/time that day.

We liked also the SegWay tours, offered by Segtours Redsea, next to HSBC bank in the Abu Tig Marina. You must have done this while being in El Gouna! Costs 35 € pp. Make reservation for 10 or 15 oclock’s guided tour of 2.5 hours long.

Seascope Submarine: nobody was available to make an appointment and the website could not be read on my smartphone or iPad. Bad marketing in my opinion.

Best Meals, not to be missed!

Jobo’s, Tamr Henna:
try the Planksteak before playing a snooker party.

El Taybeen, Downtown:
Filet with mushroom sauce, the best sauce in town!

Foool House, Downtown
the real Egyptian fool food at incredible low prices!

Vienna Cafe, also called Cafe Servus at Tamr Henna:
a warm welcome, best Coffee with pancakes and the best Ice Cream.

Kiki restaurant has gone, but the new La Luna that has rented the place has excellent italian food and delicious cakes for desert!

Restaurant Ceviche offers Spanish and Mexican food, the nachos with hot sauce are extremely hot! They offer Free Wifi and are located 30 meters opposite of elbeid supermarket

The Saigon in the Marina has nice Vietnam food, but watch the prices, because it is quite expensive!

Best burgers in premium Burger restaurant in the Marina

Maritim, Marina:
the Jumbo Shrimps with Fish sauce or Curry sauce are my number one (updated 2008)!

Thomas, Marina:
best pizza in town, (ask for the crispy version!)

Moods, Marina:
my personal choice here is the Alexandrian liver, but they changed cooks, so no longer available. The waiters do have an atitude, but last year we got free wifi here. Did not test it this year yet!

Best Transportation around El Gouna:

TokTok (local Extension 2338): 5 LE per person per ride
If 3 or more persons, however, a TAXI costs you the same: 15 LE per ride for 3 or 4 persons and you are out of the wind (especially important during colder winter season)!
Shuttle Bus: 20 LE per person for a weekly ticket
Lagoon Trip by boat: tickets at the Info Centre: 40 LE per person
(watch the changing times due to high tide)

I’ve been urged to stop my activities as editor of the El Gouna Times for the sake of my health. Therefore, I’m sorry to announce that the El Gouna Times Online Magazine will be no longer updated and our forum has been removed from this website.

The last two years I’ve spend nearly 10 months in El Gouna. And like many others, I felt in love with this special resort. During this time, I’ve met a lot of wonderful passionate people in El Gouna who are willing to let you feel at home and make your holidays to an unforgettable experience at a reasonable price. A warm thank you to all of them, without trying to name everybody in person. Hope to see you around during my next visit to El Gouna!

As a tribute to El Gouna, the nearly 700 articles, comments and reports and the over 5,000 pictures I’ve taken in El Gouna will remain online for the time to come. Please feel free to stroll through the links in the menu to the right to learn about this wonderful resort at the Red Sea in Egypt. One good advice to everybody who comes for the first time to El Gouna: don’t forget to climb the top of the Hill next to Mövenpick to view the results of what the founder of El Gouna had in mind when starting to create this resort, way back in the nineties.

For future permanent residents I would like to recommend to stay here first several weeks by renting an appartment or a villa (see our section: classified ads) and take your time to discover by yourself how daily life in El Gouna is. Even if the sun is shining every day here, living and working in El Gouna and in Egypt is still different from the European way of life. Talk with neighbours who live already here, and compare your expectations with theirs. A good starting point to exchange ideas with residents via the Internet is the Yahoo Group for El Gouna Residents (see our section: El Gouna Weblinks).

I want also to thank the Management of Orascom Hotels & Development for the clear insight in the way how they are running the El Gouna Resort in the middle of the desert in an unforgettable manner. Updated information will be available at their official website at

And to everybody: have fun in El Gouna!

Le Deauville

Dining in Le Deauville at Abu Tig Marina is always a good experience. It’s the restaurant where the menu is written on a large blackboard standing along the sidewalk and the staff will carry it to your table.

Last time we were there, we had the Crevettes with salad and rice, in a Pernod sauce. Delicious. From your table you have one of the widest views onto the marina(s) with the beautiful yachts.

The staff at the Deauville is always very friendly and our compliments certainly go to the chef!
Prices are above El Gouna standards, but the food rewards you for the full 100%.

But in January 2010 the jumbo shrimps have disapeaded from the menu. It’s a pity!
